Miro Magloire’s New Chamber Ballet will continue its 2018-19 season with two world premieres. German-born Magloire unveils a new work to music by Franz Schubert, while guest choreographer Gabrielle Lamb set her new work to music by Missy Mazzoli. Completing the program are Magloire’s Feel Your Fall, to music by contemporary German composer Wolfgang Rihm, and Two Friends set to Debussy. As always, Magloire’s superb musicians are called upon to perform compositions that range from the impressionist Debussy to the contemporary sounds of Rihm.
Magloire began his career as a composer before turning to dance, and has been praised for his musical sophistication. His new ballet is a quartet exploring cross-rhythms, and set to Franz Schubert’s Moments Musicaux Nos 2-5 for piano.
Guest choreographer Gabrielle Lamb has created an as yet untitled trio to music by major contemporary composer Missy Mazzoli, whose new opera Proving Up was performed at the Miller Theater last month. The two selections by Mazzoli both reference the past: her violin solo Dissolve, O My Heart references Bach’s legendary Chaconne, while the piano solo Map of Laughter is influenced by Schubert’s Moment Musical No.4.
The Company will repeat Feel Your Fall, premiered just last September, a gravity-defying trio to Wolfgang Rihm’s Über Die Linie VII for solo violin. “It took a few minutes for me to return to Earth from this cosmic experience,” Philip Gardner of Oberon’s Grove wrote about the premiere. “I was totally unprepared for the effect Über die Linie VII, as played by Doori Na, would have on me.” The program will be completed by Two Friends, a stormy friendship drama set to Debussy’s Sonata for violin and piano. “The subtexts of attraction and jealousy are very subtly threaded into the movement… and the sonata’s final movement calls for large-scale virtuosic dancing from all three.” (Gardner)
More About WOLFGANG RHIM. The composer was born in Karlsruhe Germany in 1952 and has become one of the most influential composers of his generation. Rihm’s output is extremely large and includes stage works, orchestral compositions, chamber music, and songs. He has been honored with many awards, including the Ernst von Siemens Music Award 92003), the Golden Lion for lifetime achievement at the Venice Biennial (2010), and the Robert Schumann Prize (2014). In 2010, the New York Philharmonic premiered his violin concerto at Avery Fisher Hall with soloist Anne-Sophie Mutter.
