Book launch and a panel discussion “Alarums & Excursions”

8th May 2019 @ 6:30 pm

Ambassador Christoph Heusgen, Permanent Representative of Germany to the United Nations, will participate in a panel discussion on the European Union on the occasion of the US launch of Alarums & Excursions: Improvising Politics on the European Stage, a book by Dutch Historian Luuk van Middelaar.

Alarums & Excursions analyzes the succession of crises which has beset the European Union in recent years – the euro crisis, Ukraine, migrations, and Brexit. In this candid and revealing portrayal of a Europe improvising its way through a politics of events and not rules, Luuk van Middelaar makes sense of the EU’s political metamorphosis over its past ten years of crisis management.

Luuk van Middelaar is a historian and political theorist. A former speechwriter and close adviser to the President of the European Council (2010-2015), van Middelaar now works as an author and academic. His previous book, The Passage to Europe, won the 2012 European Book Prize.

In addition to Luuk van Middelaar and Ambassador Heusgen, the other speakers at the event will be Sheri Berman, Professor of Political Science at Barnard College, Columbia University, and Jean-Marie Guéhenno, Distinguished Fellow at the Brookings Institution and a former Under-Secretary-General at the United Nations.

The event is co-presented by Albertine Books and the European Institute at Columbia University. It is made possible thanks to the support of the Erasmus + Programme of the European Union.

The panel discussion will take place on Wednesday, May 8, at 6:30 pm, at Albertine Books, 972 Fifth Avenue (between 78th& 79th Streets). The event is free and open to the public, no registration required.
