Conference on Resistance and Rescue under Nazi Rule

4th October 2018 - 5th October 2018

On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Rosenstrasse protest Columbia University invites you to join a conference on resistance and rescue under nazi rule, from October 4- 5, 2018.

On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Rosenstrasse protest in February 1943, Professors Volker Berghahn of Columbia UniversityMordecai Paldiel of Yeshiva University, and Nathan Stoltzfus of Florida State University are convening a conference examining resistance and rescue under the Nazi dictatorship’s “Final Solution” policy. Open to the public, the conference will convene in Columbia University’s Deutsche Haus, 420 West 116th St at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 4 for a keynote address by New York University’s Professor Marion Kaplan, followed by a reception. The conference will reconvene the following day at 9:45 am for two panels and a roundtable, including remarks by Consul General David Gill.

The conference focus is principally on Germany but also takes account of some other countries under German occupation. After introducing the larger themes of recent research into the origins of the Holocaust and the mass murder of other minorities during World War II, the first panel speakers will analyze the escalating persecution of Jews and the emergence of networks of rescuing and hiding these victims from deportation. The second panel will deal with more detailed examples of clandestine rescue operations, highlighting some differences between rule and resistance within the Reich and occupied territories in the East and West. The concluding Roundtable will return to the larger problems of the dilemmas and forms of resisting a brutal dictatorship inside Nazi Germany.

The conference will also be an occasion to invite the participating audience to identify persons who were aided and rescued by non-Jewish persons inside Nazi Germany. Of special interest are descendants and relatives of those couples associated with the Rosenstrasse protest.
