Miro Magloire’s New Chamber Ballet – Season Opening

21st September 2018 @ 8:00 pm

Magloire’s new work for three dancers, as yet untitled, is set to a violin solo by Rihm. “Few living composers write music so unabashedly emotional,” Magloire notes. “It’s awe-inspiring, and it allows the dancers to go to their limits.”

From the repertory are the ballets Amity (2017), Bach (2018), and The Letter (2012):

Amity is set to Mozart’s violin sonata in C Major.  “Right from its airy start, Amity captivates as the four dancers – in gossamer costumes – flit and fly about the space like golden birds… The concluding Rondeau sparkles both in the dancing and the playing.” (Philip Gardner, Oberon’s Grove) Amity was premiered in April 2017, commissioned by Edward Petrou in loving memory of Rachel Petrou.

Bach is another Magloire quartet and is set to five preludes and fugues from JS Bach’s The Well-Tempered Clavier.   “Dancing to JS Bach’s music,” remarked Magloire, “is always refreshing, since most of his works are loosely based on Baroque dance forms.”   The work was commissioned by Leslie and Richard Curtis as a wedding gift two years ago for Magloire and his wife.  At its premiere, “it was stunningly performed…  a very physically demanding piece, as the dancers relied on each other for strength, balance and focus.” (Bonnie Rosenstock, Exploredance.com)

The Letter, set to Haydn’s piano sonata in D Major, is a ballet in which “a tussle around the piano is between two domestic servants over billets-doux, and the lightness is comedic.” (Brian Seibert, The New York Times)

More About WOLFGANG RHIM.  The composer was born in Karlsruhe Germany in 1952 and has become one of the most influential composers of his generation.  Rihm’s output is extremely large and includes stage works, orchestral compositions, chamber music, and songs.   He has been honored with many awards, including the Ernst von Siemens Music Award 92003), the Golden Lion for lifetime achievement at the Venice Biennial (2010), and the Robert Schumann Prize (2014).  In 2010, the New York Philharmonic premiered his violin concerto at Avery Fisher Hall with soloist Anne-Sophie Mutter.
