Opening Franziska Jyrch’s exhibition ‘Super Soft Skills’

15th November 2018 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

SUPER SOFT SKILLS is the first solo exhibition of Jyrch’s work in North America; all works shown were made in New York specifically for this occasion.

Franziska Jyrch’s practice is distinguished by the extension of formal and conceptual boundaries of painting and sculpture. Jyrch sees herself as a scientist, an artistic explorer. Inspired by Eva Hesse, she doesn‘t look for fixed ideas, instead, she is interested in the category of the ‚not-yet-known‘, i.e. she follows where materials, shapes, and colors lead her. Jyrch cares equally as strong about establishing a relationship with painting, her reference to a central medium of art history, as about artistically integrating totally different materials, including various kinds of everyday and personal objects. The basic approach to her work, which is characterized by coincidence and calculation alike, consists of collecting and selecting, piecing together and dividing up, of arranging and deconstructing these very diverse materials, thereby creating complex sculptures as well as installations that can fill entire rooms.

Jyrch’s work expands our understanding of painting and sculpture, yet it is also always a consideration of rather abstract aspects, capturing the interaction of personal, social, economic, and political forces at play in the context of a show. SUPER SOFT SKILLS will therefore include large-format paintings, small-scale sculptures, and in-situ settings that address the characteristics of the host’s space and the context of the exhibition.

Franziska Jyrch (*1980) lives and works in Leipzig. She studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig (HGB), and earned a postgraduate “Meisterschüler” in 2014. She received the Marion Ermer Award for young contemporary artists, as well as several scholarships and project grants. In 2016 she was awarded a six-month Residency at ISCP (International Studio & Curatorial Program) in New York, followed by an invitation to work at MASS MoCA’s Studio Program.

Solo shows include NOTORIOUS BEIGE, Baumwollspinnerei Leipzig; BONHEUR, Vincenz Sala, Paris; PARAVENT, Project space of Galerie EIGEN+ART Leipzig; and La Pittura, Vincenz Sala, Berlin. Recent group shows include The Present Order, Museum of Contemporary Art Leipzig (GfZK); GOGOGO, Galerie Bridget Stern, Hamburg; Beyond the lines, ARCUB Bucharest; Yearzero, KUK, Zurich; Mulhouse 015, Biennale d‘Art Contemporain, Mulhouse; WERKSCHAU, Spinnerei Galleries, Leipzig; A Room of One’s Own, Kunstverein Tiergarten, Berlin, among others.
