SR Socially Relevant Film Festival NY

15th March 2019 - 21st March 2019

This year’s festival shows several outstanding German films, March 15–21, 2019 at Cinema Village and nearby venues in New York City.

German films at the SR Socially Relevant Film Festival NY:

The narrative feature film, Big Earth (Hotel California), is directed by Patrick Merz and Benno Gut, and filmed in Germany. The film is about refugees, raising solidarity and engagement as a solution with the stories based on an old hotel, lost in the countryside, and the home of dozens of refugees. BIG EARTH is the great search for an inclusive, solidarity-based and borderless world. The film was shot by 100 young people together with professional filmmakers, theatre people and educators. This is a production of DirectorsCut.ch and ABC Bildungs- und Tagungszentrum e.V. The film screens on Tuesday March 19, at 6:30 pm at Cinema Village.

The documentary film, Backlash, is directed by Sara Jegeman and partially filmed in Germany. The film is about a feminist Zeliha Dagli and her story that covers variety of topics such as violation of human rights, integration, cultural relativism, honorary killings, and Political Islam. The film screens on Monday March 18, at 4:45 pm at Cinema Village.

The short film 01 is directed by Julian Friedrich and Katharina Potratz. This animation is produced in Germany and covers the story of a refugee boy Sergam who loses his mother but finds another young woman who cares him. The film screens on Opening Night Friday March 15, at 9:15 pm at Cinema Village.

The short film The Mandarin Tree, directed by Cengiz Akaygün, is filmed and produced in Germany. It is a story of a girl and her visits to her father who is imprisoned for political reasons by the Turkish government. The film screens on Tuesday March 19, at 5:00 pm at Cinema Village.
