The COVID-19 pandemic has wreaked disaster on an international level claiming nearly 1,000,000 lives and infecting almost 30,000,000 people (source, NYT).

The medical research community has been mobilized on a global scale since early 2020 to better understand the source and cause of this virus, its transmission patterns, and how best to develop safe, effective treatments and/or therapies.

Vaccination remains the best weapon to safeguard the international community against the virus. Can the unprecedented commitment of resources resulting from the private-public partnerships tackling vaccine development achieve success in a timely fashion? Where is the industry in the development process? How soon can the world expect a safe and effective vaccine? How will pricing and distribution be managed? And once a vaccine is developed, who will decide which groups are a priority for vaccination?

Join Drs. Simon Wain-Hobson, virologist at the Institut Pasteur, and Marie-Paule Kieny, Research Director at Inserm, in a live Zoom conference to address the latest findings and knowledge on the virus and the challenges faced in developing a COVID-19 vaccine.

Simon Wain-Hobson

He is Professor at the Institut Pasteur and member of the European Molecular Biology Organization, Academia Europaea, and he is presently Board Chair of the Foundation for Vaccine Research in Washington DC, a non-profit organization working for research in the area of vaccination. He has been an outspoken defender of responsible virology, maintaining that scientists cannot make the world a more dangerous place by tinkering with viruses. Simon moved to Paris in 1980 where he worked human virology, notably on the AIDS virus HIV, from the earliest hour. Being the first to publish its genetic map his group went on to show that it evolved from a chimpanzee virus. They highlighted with exquisite precision the phenomenal genetic variation and rapid evolution of HIV.

Marie-Paule Kieny

Dr Marie-Paule Kieny is Director of Research at Inserm in Paris, in charge of the Priority Research Program on Antibiotic Resistance initiated by France in 2019 as part of the Investment Program for the Future. She also represents France on the Board of Directors of the Joint Programming Initiative on Antimicrobial Resistance. Marie-Paule Kieny is Chair of the Board of Directors of the Drugs for Neglected Diseases Initiative (Switzerland) and of the Medicines Patent Pool Foundation (Switzerland). She is also Vice-Chair of the Board of the Global Antibiotic Research and Development Partnership (Switzerland), member of the Board of Directors of the Human Vaccine Project (USA), of Fondation Mérieux (France) and of the association Solidarité Thérapeutique et Initiatives pour la Santé (France). She is an independent nonexecutive Director of bioMérieux (France). She participates in the scientific councils of several organizations active in the field of health.
