WSNY Presents: New Insights into Wagner’s Ring Cycle

WSNY invites you to their 39th annual seminar “New Insights into Wagner’s Ring Cycle”, on Sunday, March 31, 2019.

The German Consulate General Recommends: The revival of the Metropolitan Opera’s Ring cycle, production by Robert Lepage,  heralds  the 39th annual seminar of the Wagner Society of New York, “New Insights into Wagner’s Ring Cycle”,on Sunday, March 31.

The event, noon to 5 p.m. at St. Joseph’s School,  420 East 87th St., Manhattan, will offer distinguished speakers and a Met cast roundtable. Robert J. Sweeney will moderate a program that includes  Gundula Kreuzer, Yale University associate professor of music, on “Flat Bayreuth: The Challenges of Multimediality in Wagner’s 1876 Ring Production”; musicologist Hannah Chan-Hartley on “New World Encounters: Early American Performances of Wagner’s Ring Cycle, 1877-1903”; Alexander K. Rothe, Music Humanities lecturer, Columbia University, on “Women, Sound and Technology: Ruth Berghaus’ Ring Cycle (1985-1987); and Simon Williams, professor emeritus, theater and dance, University of California, Santa Barbara, on  ”Wieland Wagner, Modernist Revolutionary or Traditionalist?“

Another major Ring-related event will be a three-hour lunch cruise, Rhine Journey on the Hudson, on Sunday, May 5, noon to 3 p.m.
