Inside Modern Art Foundry, from Casting Sculptures to Live Bronze Pour

20th March 2020 @ 12:30 pm - 2:30 pm

Hidden inside the former carriage house of the Steinway Mansion in Astoria, Queens, is one of the borough’s most treasured family-owned businesses; a foundry that produces some of the world’s most famous sculptures. Now’s your chance to get a rare look inside this historic facility and get a front-row seat to the magic of sculpting that few have ever seen.

Join New York Adventure Club for a special trip inside Modern Art Foundry — founded in 1932, this family-owned foundry specializing in casting bronze sculptures employs skilled craftspersons, tools, machinery, and technology to cast sculptures ranging from two inches in height to 50 feet tall.

Led by the CEO and third-family generation owner of Modern Art Foundry, our unique experience exploring this ancient art form will include:

  • An overview of the foundry, which has produced over 15,000 sculptures for artists like Lipchitz, Lachaise, and Noguchi
  • An exploration of the facility to learn about the artistic fabrication process, from sculpting to molding to casting
  • A rare opportunity to watch a bronze pour, which involves pouring molten metal into molds — a tradition that extends back almost 5000 years
