Miro Magloire’s New Chamber Ballet

8th June 2018 @ 8:00 pm - 9th June 2018 @ 10:00 pm

Miro Magloire’s New Chamber Ballet will close its 2017-18 season with performances of works by Magloire and resident choreographer Constantine Baecher, on June 8 & 9 in their home base of City Center Studio 5, 130 West 56th Street. As always, all ballets will be performed in the round, with live music by pianist Melody Fader and violinist Doori Na, and costuming by Sarah Thea.

Magloire will present the World Premiere of his Schattentanz, a trio to music by Reiko Fueting, made possible by the Company’s third commission from the O’Donnell-Green Music and Dance Foundation. Collaborating for the second time with Fueting, Magloire’s concept was to interweave music and dance in intricate ways. The score is inspired by the musician’s physical gestures as much as the sounds they produce, and leaves room for the dancers’ movements to be heard as well. Contemporary composer Fueting is, like Magloire, a native of Germany.  Recipient of many prizes, grants and scholarships, the composer joined the Manhattan School of Music theory faculty in 2000, becoming a member of the composition faculty five years later and then department chair of theory. An excerpt from the dance was previewed last November and has now been extended for its official premiere.

Another highlight will be Childrens Corner, a playful charmer by Constantine Baecher premiered by the Company last April. Set to Debussy’s piano score, the ballet references a set of childhood objects: first a ball, which “gets rolled cunningly from person to person, then a bolt of translucent white fabric is brought into play… In an intriguing solo, [a dancer] brings forth a white balloon and balances it along her arms and shoulders, playfully batting it into the air on her fingertips… Mr. Baecher’s ends this highly enjoyable ballet with the girls engaging in a clapping game.” (Philip Gardner, Oberon’s Grove).Baecher created his first work for New Chamber Ballet in 2006, and has been the company’s resident choreographer since 2014.

Also on the program is an expanded version of Magloire’s Calices, a ballet premiered in February to music by Kaija Saariaho. Saariaho, a native of Finland, is a major contemporary composer whose opera, L’Amour de Loin, was recently performed by the Metropolitan Opera. Magloire’s ballet is a high-energy romp for four dancers.

The evening will be completed by Entangled, a double duet set to Paganini’s violin Caprices. “Violinist Doori Na rightly won a round of bravos for his skillful playing of the ballet’s Paganini score… The choreography calls for much partnering and the use of counter-weight, and frequently the dancers assemble themselves in sculptural poses. The four dancers… did a beautiful job of ‘Entangling’.” (Philip Gardner, Oberon’s Grove)
