St. George’s Choral Society performs Mendelssohn’s Elijah

St. George’s Choral Society celebrates the music of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy with a performance of his monumental oratorio “Elijah,” on Wednesday, November 20 at 7:00 PM. The concert is at the historic St. George’s Church, Rutherford Place on Stuyvesant Square (closest subways: Union Square).

This performance will be with orchestra, sung in English, and conducted by Artistic Director Matthew Lewis, with baritone soloist Steven LaBrie. Also featured are soloists Chloé Olivia Moore, soprano; Raehann Bryce-Davis, mezzo-soprano, and Arnold Livingston Geis, tenor.

Mendelssohn took 10 years to complete Elijah, following the success of his earlier oratorio, St. Paul. He conducted the premiere in Birmingham. This large-scale work is in two parts and will be sung in its entirety, with intermission. The splendid acoustics of St. George’s Church will make this a unique performance, unlike any concert hall.

St. George’s Choral Society has been sharing performances of great works of music, old and new, for chorus and orchestra since 1817.
