TFF: Gender Impact in Medicine

Transatlantic Female Forum aims to strengthen the cooperation between Germany, Europe and North America. The visibility of women and their networking in the fields of business, politics, science and culture is to be promoted. The forum offers a platform for open dialogue, different perspectives and discussions. This is achieved through events, research projects, symposia and study groups in the German-American Dialogue. The Forum also receives further content through digital conferences and coaching programs. The members of the Forum enrich the transatlantic cooperation of international women in different areas of life with their expertise.

Prof. Dr. Sandra Eifert on her field of Gender Medicine How I got into the field of gender medicine: I originally come from cardiac surgery. The mortality of women is about twice as high as that of men in cardiovascular diseases, and this is independent of the therapy. Therefore, the question simply arose: why? What is certain, however, is that the gender differences extend to the entire course of a disease and include risk factors, symptoms, diagnosis, therapy and the outcome after a possible therapy. After I first dealt with this scientifically, I initiated the lecture on the topic and a seminar series at the Medical Faculty of the LMU Munich in 2010 and founded a working group of the German Society of Cardiac Surgeons. The corresponding professorship followed in 2012 at the MHH. My current position is women’s consultation at the Heart Center Leipzig. Why this topic deserves attention: Treating women like little men is not enough. Also: Gender-sensitive medicine is timely.
