Global competence is essential in the 21st century workplace. With 1 in 5 jobs in America related to international trade, employers are increasingly looking for workers who have cross-cultural competence in addition to technical skills. According to a recent British Council study conducted among nearly 400 employers in 9 countries, there is “real business value in employing staff who have the ability to effectively work with individuals and organizations from cultural backgrounds other than their own,” as more than two-thirds of these employers reported that employees engage frequently with colleagues, customers, or partners outside of their country. Other recent studies show that an international experience is one of the best ways students can acquire global skills, and can have substantial long-term impact on individuals’ career paths.
