WSNY Presents: Rare Treat – Vampire Opera on Film

23rd February 2020

WSNY invites you to see the first complete Wagner opera produced as a feature film “Der Fliegende Holländer” on February 23, 2020.

The German Consulate General Recommends:

Here’s your chance to see the first complete Wagner opera produced as a feature film, Der Fliegende Hollander (The Flying Dutchman), directed in 1964 by Joachim Herz (1924-2013), with separate casts for acting and singing. The presentation from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb.  23 will be in the Dolby Screening Room, Manhattan, 1350 Avenue of the Americas at  West 55th St., Suite 2400. Co-sponsor of the event is DEFA Film Library at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. DEFA is a film archive from the former East Germany.

The film will be introduced by Hilan Warshaw, founder/director Overtone Films LLC. He notes that the Act III villagers’ encounter with the Dutchman’s crew  “is a frightening piece of horror filmmaking.”  Senta’s first meeting with the Dutchman, with eerie lighting and visual details, explicitly recalls the defining classic of vampire cinema, F. W. Murnau’s “Nosferatu” (1922).
